The Jamaican patty is Toronto’s unofficial handheld meal. Flaky, golden, stuffed with beef and eaten on the move, it crossed the ocean with the Windrush-era wave and never left. Ask ten Yardies where the best patty in the GTA is and you will get eleven answers and one argument. So we did the delicious homework: 12 patty shops across Toronto, Scarborough, Brampton and Markham, scored on crust, filling, value and reputation. One winner. Let’s get into it.

How we ranked: Every shop on this list was scored on four criteria, each out of 10, for a maximum of 40:

  • Crust (10): flake, butteriness, structure. The shatter test. If it holds together past the first bite without turning to gravel, it scores.
  • Filling (10): seasoning, moisture, filling-to-crust ratio, and heat options. Gravy counts. Scarcity of meat does not.
  • Value (10): price per patty against what you get, bulk and box deals included.
  • Reputation (10): review consensus across Google and food platforms, media mentions, and street-level word of mouth from actual Yardies.

A word on method: this is desk research, not a tasting tour. Nobody on the team ate through all 12 in one sitting (our doctor has feelings about that). The ranking blends review consensus, local reputation and media recognition across the GTA. It is one team’s opinion, not a tribunal verdict. Prices shift fast, so treat them as a guide and confirm at the counter.

12. Patties Express, Downtown and Scarborough

220 Yonge St (Eaton Centre), plus Union Station and Scarborough Town Centre

The budget king of the downtown core. Extra spicy beef, curry chicken and vegan veggie patties, patty and coco bread combos, and half-dozen boxes that keep office workers alive. Reviewers call it the best price in the core, with a hot chicken patty going for around $1.90. Flaky pastry, honest filling, unbeatable value. The financial district lunch hero.

11. Allwyn’s Bakery, Queen West and across the GTA

404 Queen St W, plus multiple GTA locations

The family-owned Caribbean bakery chain that raised a generation of downtown Torontonians. Beef patties by the box, jerk chicken sandwiches, oxtail gravy over rice and peas. Takeout-friendly prices and a “patties never disappoint” consensus across locations. When you need a patty at 9pm on Queen West, Allwyn’s is there.

10. Michidean, Markham

7725 Birchmount Rd, Unit 28, Markham

The wholesale legend gone TikTok-viral. Michidean is a factory bakery selling fresh and frozen patties direct to the public: spicy beef, mild beef, chicken, veggie and cocktail patties, no cheap fillers. The insider pick is the extra-spicy beef. A box of 12 runs about $20 cash, which works out to roughly $1.67 a patty, the best value on this entire list. Stock your freezer and thank us later.

9. Caribbean Queen of Patties, Bloor West

1294 Bloor St W

A hole-in-the-wall with a one-woman operation and a devoted following. The patties here are famously oversized, with reviewers calling the veggie “a full pound” and the beef “the chonkiest patty I’ve ever had” at around $5. Thick flaky pastry, generous fillings, plus oxtail, jerk chicken and curry goat on the menu. A west-side cult spot and a certified hidden gem.

8. Pattylicious, Upper Beach

1089 Kingston Rd

The stuffed-patty innovator. Every patty is made from scratch with natural ingredients, no fillers, and the signatures are stuffed like a meal: pimento-wood smoked jerk chicken, hickory-smoked beef short rib (the “RibFest”), coleslaw and cheese fillings. Stuffed patties run $7.29 to $16.09, so this is dinner, not a snack. The east end’s boldest patty experiment, and it works.

7. Patty King Bakery, Scarborough

321 Progress Ave, Scarborough

Scarborough’s iconic patty bakery. Fresh flaky patties baked on site all day, spicy beef, curry goat on rice and peas, fish fritters, cash-only takeout counter. Locals don’t debate this one, they just swear by it. (Note: this is a different business from the Kensington shop formerly known as Patty King, which is now Golden Patty at number 3. Toronto patty lore is complicated.)

6. Tinnel’s West Indian Take-Out, Eglinton West, Brampton and beyond

2517 Eglinton Ave W (flagship), plus locations in Brampton, Etobicoke and North York

The multi-location institution. Chicken, beef and veggie patties in mild or spicy scotch bonnet, plus a full Jamaican takeout menu: curry goat, jerk chicken, oxtail, mannish water. The Brampton locations make Tinnel’s the west-end staple, and the patties are famously budget-friendly: a box of 12 runs about $22, roughly $1.83 a patty. Most locations of any patty brand on this list, and every one of them moves volume.

Confession: Ask the Canadian Yardie team where we actually buy patties and this entire ranking goes out the window. The answer is the Kennedy Road counter in Brampton, 39 Kennedy Rd N. The team runs on Tinnel’s. We attempted impartiality. We failed. The heart wants what the heart wants, and ours wants a hot beef with coco bread.

5. June Plum by Patois, Dundas West

796 Dundas St W

Chef Craig Wong’s patty offshoot next door to his Patois restaurant, and the fine-dining end of the patty spectrum. Pyramid-shaped patties with luxury fillings: smoked brisket in oxtail gravy, curry goat, crab coconut rundown, vegan cashew callaloo rundown. Around $11 a patty, premium tier, and the consensus is pricey but worth it. Proof of how high the ceiling goes.

4. Crumbs Gourmet Patties, Kensington Market

160 Baldwin St, Unit 7B

The gourmet upgrader. Croissant-like egg-washed crust, classic beef and curry chicken alongside loaded creations like beef and cheese and the pizza pouch. Run by Pierre St. Rose, sells out fast, slightly higher prices than the classic shops. This is the patty as a craft product, and Kensington is exactly where it belongs. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm (till 6pm Friday and Saturday), closed Monday and Tuesday. One directory recently showed them as temporarily closed, so call ahead on the day if you’re making a trip: (647) 907-9932.

3. Golden Patty, Kensington Market

187 Baldwin St

The Kensington anchor, formerly known as Patty King. Nine varieties on the board: spicy beef, curry goat, jerk pork, jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, callaloo, veggie. Buttery flaky crust, patty and coco bread combos, around $5 a patty. The most “best of” list appearances of any shop on this ranking. If there’s a downtown patty establishment, this is it.

2. Patty Time, Scarborough

2919 Lawrence Ave E

The connoisseur’s pick. A cult-favorite strip mall counter on Lawrence East: juicy beef patties with abundant gravy, thin flaky suet crust, spicier chicken patties, coco bread, oxtail. Cash only, first come first served, regularly sells out by mid-afternoon (Tue to Fri 10:30am to 4:30pm, Sat till 3pm). The highest rating-to-hype ratio on this list, with multiple reviewers calling it the best Jamaican patty in Toronto, full stop.

1. Randy’s Take-Out, Little Jamaica

1569 Eglinton Ave W

There was never any real doubt. Randy’s is the heritage pick, the Little Jamaica legend, family owned since 1979, serving flaky beef, jerk chicken and oxtail patties from the same Eglinton West counter for generations. It closed in 2022 under the weight of LRT construction and COVID pressures, and the 2024 reopening drew lines around the block and coverage across the city. Around $3.25 a patty (confirmed by reviewers as recently as July 2026), 4.3 stars across more than 1,200 reviews, and a reputation no newcomer can buy. Open Tuesday to Friday 11am to 6pm and Saturday till 5pm, closed Sunday and Monday. No GTA patty ranking is credible without Randy’s at the top. The crown stays on Eglinton.

Honorable mentions

Fahmee Bakery (Scarborough and Lansdowne): fuelling the city with rectangular beef patties since 1970, subway-station fame included. Allan’s Pastry Shop (3056 Don Mills Rd): North York old school, famous for coco bread sandwiches and curry goat patties. P Jay’s Jamaican Take-Out (2677 Kennedy Rd, Scarborough): cash-only takeout joint with fierce local loyalty.
