For a lot of Caribbean Canadians, a winter trip to Jamaica is not a vacation first. It is a home visit first, a family reunion second, and a beach day after that. You are counting down to hugs at the airport and to Sunday dinner with people you only see on a screen most of the year.
That is why the winter flight news matters more than a tourism headline. Jamaica expects about 400,000 airline seats from Canada for the 2026-27 winter season. That is not 400,000 bookings, and it is not a promise of cheap fares. It is capacity: more chances to find a direct flight, more choice of departure city, and more room to plan a trip that fits a family schedule and a budget that must stretch across gifts, luggage, and ground transport.
What 400,000 seats actually means
The Jamaica Tourist Board puts the winter total at approximately 400,000 seats from Canada. The capacity includes expanded service from Air Canada, Sunwing and WestJet, along with new nonstop service from Porter Airlines. Other carriers serving Jamaica this winter include Flair Airlines, Air Transat and Caribbean Airlines, according to the Tourist Board.
Canada is Jamaica‘s second largest source market. That matters because these routes are not built only for resort tourists. They are also built for people visiting family, people travelling with children and elders, and people who know which airport is closer to home.
Jamaica aims for 600,000 annual visitors from Canada and US$750 million in tourism earnings from the Canadian market by 2030, under its Tourism 3.0 framework. Porter’s new direct routes are expected to add nearly 5,000 seats for the winter season. That changes the map for three Canadian cities, and that is where the practical value sits.
The new routes, city by city
Porter will fly to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay from three Canadian gateways. Toronto Pearson starts November 23, 2026, at up to five flights weekly. Ottawa starts November 25, 2026, at two flights weekly. Hamilton starts December 20, 2026, at two flights weekly. Porter is the only airline offering nonstop service between Hamilton and Montego Bay.
Toronto gives GTA travellers flexibility, with more chances to match a flight to a family event or a school break. Check the exact days for your week, because up to five weekly does not mean every day.
Ottawa saves a whole extra leg through Toronto or Montreal for families in the capital region and eastern Ontario. For elders travelling alone, for parents with small children, and for anyone carrying gifts, one less connection is less stress and a shorter day.
Hamilton is the sleeper pick, and the one that needs the most careful planning. It puts Jamaica within direct reach of travellers across the Greater Golden Horseshoe for the first time on Porter. But the start date is December 20, very close to Christmas. Treat it as a narrow window, not a wide open one. Book early, check the return flight just as carefully as the outbound flight, and have a Toronto or Ottawa backup in mind before you commit.
Porter will operate the routes with Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with no middle seats, according to the airline’s route announcement. That does not change the price, baggage rules, or change policy on your fare.

Booking windows, without the fare guessing
This article does not quote fares, because fares move by day, by route, and by how full a flight already is. Any price quoted here would be out of date before you finished reading it. Use a booking window that protects you from the most common mistakes instead.
Search with flexible dates if your trip allows it. A flight one day earlier or later can change the whole trip, especially on a twice weekly route where the next direct flight is not tomorrow. Compare the total, not just the headline fare. Add the checked bag, the carry on rules for your fare, seat selection if you need to sit together, and any change fee that applies if plans shift. Read those lines before you pay, not after.
Protect the return. Christmas and New Year travel is not the time to assume the flight home will be easy to change. If your return is on a twice weekly service, a missed flight or a changed plan can mean days, not hours, before the next direct option. If your dates are fixed by work or school, that risk should shape which departure city and which flight you choose.
Before you pay: the home visit checklist
Confirm the airport codes and the dates out loud: Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Ottawa (YOW) or Hamilton (YHM) to Montego Bay (MBJ). Confirm the return date, the arrival time in Jamaica, and who is meeting you. A late arrival can still be a great arrival if family knows the plan.
Confirm where you are staying on your first night, and that it is ready on your dates. If you are staying with family, confirm the room, the key, and the ride from Sangster. If you are staying at a hotel or guesthouse, confirm the booking directly as well as through any travel site, especially for a Christmas week stay.
Confirm your travel documents early through official sources, and check your packing plan against the airline’s rules for your fare. Gifts and extra luggage for family are part of many Jamaican home visits, so check what is allowed in checked and carry on bags before you pack.
Confirm your ground plan from Sangster. Montego Bay is the gateway, not the whole trip, so plan the leg to Negril, Ocho Rios, Kingston, or a smaller town with the same care as the flight.

Why this winter feels different
More seats do not automatically mean a better trip. They mean a better chance to build a trip around family, not around whatever flight happens to be left. Toronto gives you frequency. Ottawa gives you a direct option without a Toronto connection. Hamilton gives the Golden Horseshoe a new front door, with a tight December start that rewards early planning.
Use the 400,000 seats as a starting point, not a sales pitch. Pick your city, check the exact days and the total cost, protect the return, and confirm the home visit details before you pay. Then the trip can be what it is supposed to be: less time in airports, more time with the people you crossed an ocean to see.
