Issue #1: Scotia’s Move, Rare Earth Dreams, and TSX Gold.
March 11, 2026
Respect!
Welcome to the very first issue of Dividends & Diaspora. If you’re here, you’re likely a Canadian Yardie living in the GTA (or beyond) who is done choosing between tracking the TSX and knowing what’s happening back home.
You want freedom. Specifically, the financial freedom that comes from passive income (Dividends), and the cultural freedom that comes from knowing your roots and opportunities (Diaspora).
We’re starting with $0 and a vision. Let's get right into the report that will help us build our bags and our legacy.
Part 1: The Dividend Report (The "Passive" Side)
Our goal is cash flow. We want money coming into our accounts, whether we wake up and go to work in Mississauga, or stay home and watch the snowfall.
Here are two major moves from the last week of trading:
📈 Scotiabank (BNS.TO) & Scotia Group Jamaica (SGJ)
This week, Scotia Group Jamaica (SGJ), the island-based subsidiary of our Canadian banking giant, declared its quarterly dividend. They held steady at 0.45 cents per stock unit. This is critical.
Why this matters for us: Jamaica is still recovering from the significant economic impact of Hurricane Melissa (2025). When a major financial institution like SGJ maintains its dividend output after a crisis, it’s a sign of profound resilience. It signals that the banking system is stable and consumer activity is rebounding.
For those of us holding the parent stock, BNS.TO, on the TSX (which pays a healthy ~6% yield), this is a reassurance. A strong subsidiary in the Caribbean protects the dividend safety of the Canadian giant.
💰 TSX Cash Flow Pick: Peyto Exploration (PEY.TO)
Peyto just released their full 2025 annual results. The big takeaway for dividend investors: They generated over $650 million in free cash flow and returned $264 million of that directly to shareholders in the form of dividends.
Why we care: Peyto pays a monthly dividend (currently yielding around 11% based on today’s price). Monthly cash flow is the ultimate goal. While the energy sector can be volatile, Peyto’s aggressive stance on cash payouts makes it a stock that should be on your March watchlist if you are looking to accelerate your passive income growth.
Part 2: The Diaspora Digest (The "Roots" Side)
We don't just invest to buy things; we invest to change narratives and build communities. Here is what you need to know about the opportunities and cultural shifts happening in our home.
🇩🇲 Rare Earth Dreams: Jamaica’s New Gold Rush?
A potentially massive economic shift is underway. Floyd Green, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, is aggressively pushing for the development of a rare-earth minerals industry on the island.
The Opportunity: Traditional bauxite mining (for aluminum) leaves behind a "red mud" waste. New research shows that this waste is rich in rare-earth elements—the critical components needed for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, solar panels, and high-tech defense systems. Minister Green is seeking partners to process this residue, creating a whole new industrial sector.
For the Diaspora: This is a forward-thinking investment story. A successful rare-earth industry would drastically alter Jamaica’s trade balance and create hundreds of high-tech jobs. If you are looking for long-term direct investment or real estate opportunity near industrial zones, this is the macro-story to watch.
🇨🇦 Conference Alert: Jamaica Diaspora Canada National Conference
It’s official. The 11th Biennial Diaspora Conference is returning to Toronto this summer. The dates are July 21–23, 2026.
Why you must go: This isn't just a gala. This is the official intersection point for the Jamaican government, Canadian industry leaders, and us—the investors. Key topics include:
Digital and creative industry partnerships.
The "Future of Farming" and agri-investment.
Healthcare and education development.
This is the premier networking event for anyone serious about doing business between Canada and Jamaica. Dividends & Diaspora will be in the building. Save the dates.
Part 3: The Big Up
We close every issue by highlighting a local victory or community hero in the GTA.
🇯🇲 The Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA)
A huge "Big Up" to the JCA in North York, which recently hosted its first Diaspora Health and Wellness Forum. We know that financial wealth is meaningless without physical health. For 63 years, the JCA has been a bedrock of support for our community. If you haven't visited their center or supported their scholarship funds, now is the time to reconnect.
Until next Saturday, keep your portfolio growing and your connections strong.
Respect,
